Vineyard Update 2009: The Grape Expectations

From world-class apples to world-class grapes, the promise of south-shore Lake Chelan viticulture is fulfilling every expectation. The wines from our estate vineyards have been awarded over 60+ Gold Medals, Double Gold Medals, Best of Class and Best of Show in major Washington, national and international wine competitions over the past 24 months.

The Estate Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Syrah are rapidly being recognized among the best in the Northwest.

Chelan's legendary summer sun, long summer days and cool nights are ideal for growing fruit such as apples and cherries. Extensive research tolds us it will also be ideal for growing World Class wine grapes. Five outstanding vintages have confirmed the early hopes for this region. The uniqueness of this region was confirmed when granted its own designated viticulture area for Lake Chelan. A large deep water lake, gentle slopes and lake breezes to temper climatic extremes make the south shore of Lake Chelan a rewarding viticulture venture. Both vineyards and winery are pioneering showplaces where every aspect, from grape to wine, is an expression of our respect and efforts to preserve the land, our commitment to excellence and our pursuit of perfection.

Our vineyards have been planted with meticulous attention to detail. It's not just the hundreds of roses you will see at the end of every row of vines. It is an effort to most effectively use precious water resources and minimize use of chemicals while gently coaxing the best from this famous agricultural land. A wide variety of premium wine grapes are being planted to let the land tell us what varieties will be worthy of the Tsillan Cellars label. The vineyards are presently planted to Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbara, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. If any variety does not meet the standards of winemaker, it will not be bottled. Each block of grape vineyard is continually evaluated. If they do not meet our high expectations they will be replaced with those varieties proven to be most compatible with the land (terroir) and climate.
